Cabled Wedding Blanket

Cabled Wedding Blanket, or what I like to call "The baby-makin' blanket". This crocheted blanket uses two different crochet stitches and a lovely technique called cables. I will start off by saying this blanket probably isn't a great beginner project but is also not the most difficult, once you get the hang of cables, it goes by fast! So grab yourself a cup of coffee or a chilled glass of wine and let's get hooking!

Materials
  • 7mm crochet hook
  • Medium worsted weight yarn (I used Hobby Lobby's "I Love This Yarn" in Ivory, 8-10 skeins)
  • Scissors

Special Stitches

  • Front Post Double Crochet (Fpdc): YO, insert hook behind post of stitch (insert hook from front to back of stitch), YO, pull up a loop, YO, (pull through 2 loops) twice.
  • Back Post Double Crochet (Bpdc)YO, insert hook behind post of stitch (insert hook from back to front of stitch), YO, pull up a loop, YO, (pull through 2 loops) twice.
  • Front Post Treble Crochet (Fptc)Yarn Over (YO) twice, insert hook from front to back around post of stitch indicated. YO and pull up a loop, [YO and draw through 2 loops on hook] 3 times.
  • Back Post Treble Crochet (Bptc):Yarn Over (YO) twice, insert hook from back to front around post of stitch indicated. YO and pull up a loop, [YO and draw through 2 loops on hook] 3 times.

Let's Get Hooking!

*After each round, you will turn and chain 3. Every beginning chain 3 counts as the row's first dc*
Chain 99
R1: dc in 4th chain from hook and in every chain across (97 dcs in total), turn
R2: ch 3 (counts as first dc here on out), Bpdc in next st, Fpdc in next, Bpdc in next, *repeat until last st*, dc in top ch 3. turn
R3: ch 3, Fpdc in next st, Bpdc in next, Fpdc in next, *rep until last st*, dc in top of ch 3. turn
R4:5: rep rows 2-3
R6: ch 3, dc in each st across until last three sts, sk next st, dc in last 2 sts (including in top of ch 3). turn
R7: ch 3, dc in next 2 sts, *skip 3 dcs, fptc around next 3 dcs, fptc around skipped sts, dc in next 3 sts, sk 1 st, fptc around next dc, fptc around skipped st, dc in next 3 sts* rep from * 6 times, dc in last 3 sts. turn
R8: ch 3, dc in next 2 sts, *bptc around next 6 sts, dc in next 3 sts, bptc around next 2 sts, dc in next 3 sts* rep from * 6 times, dc in last 3 sts. (first set of cables finished!) turn
R9-57: rep rows 7-8 until you reach desired length!
R58: ch 3, dc in each st across until last two sts, dc 2 in next st, dc in last st. turn
R59: ch 3, fpdc in next st, bpdc in next, fpdc in next *rep until last st*, dc in top of ch 3. turn
R60: ch 3, bpdc in next st, fpdc in next, bpdc in next *rep until last st*, dc in top of ch 3. turn
R61-62: rep rows 59-60.
Fasten off & weave in ends.

Fringe (optional)

Holding 6 stands of yarn together, each 16' long, add fringe across short of blanket

And that's it! Not too difficult at all, huh? A little timely but I'm going to go ahead and guess you quite enjoyed your time binge watching Netflix while cooking this up! ;)

I hope this pattern was explained well enough, however it is only my 2nd pattern to write out, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

So thrilled to hear that this was easy for you, I'm sure you're going to make a BEAUTIFUL blanket for your cousin!! If you wouldn't mind, I'd love to see a pic of it after you've finished!

  13. Hi Katie! Can you tell me the approximate dimensions of this blanket when it is finished? I have knit cables before but never crocheted them. So, I am a little confused over only chaining 99 stitches. Generally when I crochet a blanket I end up chaining between 200 and 250 stitches.
Any clarification would be awesome. Thanks so much! Your pattern is absolutely beautiful and I cannot wait to try it!

    1. I don't know if you've found an answer to this but looks like in the pattern you can determine the length by the number of rows. Rows 9-57. Looks like it's made to be a rectangle, building on the short side.

  16. Hi Katie! I am stuck on R7. I'm a little lost at the point where you say to fptc AROUND the skipped stitches. Can you clarify?

    1. :, *skip 3 dcs, fptc around next 3 dcs, fptc around skipped sts, dc in next 3 sts, sk 1 st, fptc around skipped st, ...... I think she means to fptc around the stitches you SKIPPED (going back)...at least that's how I read it. I've come across patterns like this before.

  17. Katie....going to make this for my granddaughter's wedding this spring. Can you help me change the pattern to make it wider to cover two people at a time? How many stitches would I have to add to the 99? Thanks Sharon

    1. I calc a repeat of 15?
      3sc, 1 st, 3 (come back) fptc, 3 fptc, 3dc, 1 (come back) fptc, 1 fptc

That's what I'm gonna do anyways!

  25. Hello. I was wondering if you have made a video using this wedding blanket pattern? I have had to take this out twice after the 10th row. I made my blanket extra wide so two people could cuddle up under so. I chained 10 + 1 over and again until I thought it wide enough. Did I do that right?
Thank you for your attention to my silly problem.

  26. I would love to make this for a wedding gift. Can you or someone clarify the border directions please? I didn't understand (16' strands etc) Is it around the whole thing or just on the ends? Thanks

  27. Can you post the number of stitches that should be in each row? According to my calculations, each row should be a multiple of 14 stitches but 99, 97, or 96 in a row don't work. Would love to make this when I understand!

  29. Hi! What skill level would you say this blanket is?

    ReplyDelete
  30. I am just about to start this blanket and after reading all the comments I see there isn't anyone actually certain of the size or how to increase the width. Sure wish that was in the original pattern. Either way I'm gonna give it a shot! If I figure it out I'll share!
